Unmute ArtsAbility Festival is Africa’s premier Integrated Arts Platform that presents a display of collaborative artistic works by artists with mixed-abilities (With and without disability) and from mixed genres (Music, Dance, Drama Visual Art etc.). It’s a week-long event of activities that occurs annually during the International month for Persons living with Disabilities in November/December. Presenting Theatre, Live Performances, Live Exhibitions/installations, Site-specific shows, Out-doors and public art performances that take place in and around Cape town.
The festival is an end product of artistic workshops/creations and programming that is facilitated by artists from Unmute Dance Theatre who are currently pioneering inclusive arts in South Africa. Throughout the year there are facilitations and initiation of programmes that integrates people living with disability within their respective communities in all 9 provinces. These programmes include workshop processes with more than 200 young people living with disabilities across the country; a month long artistic residencies that are a collaboration of People living with disability(s) with local and International artists taking place in Cape Town, in partnership with disability lead institutions/organisations and schools.
In 2019, the festival celebrates its fifth anniversary with a theme called SHIFT (Spaces and Homes Integration Festival of Transformation). This is aimed at taking the festival’s activities back to the people in their spaces of residence, their homes, their community spaces; with the mission of encouraging the society on how to integrate, involve and work collectively with persons of disabilities. Also to break the stigma that is attached to disability by making people aware that persons with disability are active members of the society.
